The evolution with time of the spatial distribution of the largest Lyapunov exponent on the human epileptic cortex
نویسنده
چکیده
The topic of this presentation is the investigation of the epileptic human brain as a nonlinear system that undergoes a phase transition (epileptic seizure). The estimated values of the largest Lyapunov exponent L over time indicated a more chaotic state postictally than ictally or preictally. The start of a seizure corresponds to a simultaneous drop in the values of L at the focal electrode sites. The observed slow cyclic variations in the temporal Lyapunov profiles imply attempts of the system to undergo a phase transition minutes before the seizure’s onset. The analysis of the maximum rate of entropy production over space revealed an initial phase difference of minutes preictally at the sites overlying the seizure focus, which progressed to phase locking with a slow entrainment of the rest of the cortical sites shortly before the onset of a seizure. It is also conjectured that the abnormal spiking electrical activity of the brain plays a major role in the unfolding of the phenomenon. The above results suggest that localization and prediction of an impending seizure may be possible up to 10 minutes before the actual event. A model for the generation of a focal epileptic seizure is proposed based on these findings.

متن کاملStudying Transition Behavior of Neutron Point Kinetics Equations Using the Lyapunov Exponent Method
The neutron density is one of the most important dynamical parameters in a reactor. It is directly related to the control and stability of the reactor power. Any change in applied reactivity and some of dynamical parameters in the reactor causes a change in the neutron density. Lyapunov exponent method is a powerful tool for investigating the range of stability and the transient behavior of the...

Modeling and analysis of future prices has been hot topic for economic analysts in recent years. Traditionally, the complex movements in the prices are usually taken as random or stochastic process. However, they may be produced by a deterministic nonlinear process. Accuracy and efficiency of economic models in the short period forecasting is strategic and crucial for business world. Nonlinear ...
